SOUK JARA
My favorite marketplace in Jordan filled with all of the flavors of the Middle Eastern culture.
If you find yourself ever visiting Amman, Jordan between the months of May through September, you will not want to miss out on the cultural phenomenon that is Jara Market which occurs every Friday from 10am – 10 pm. Souk Jara (also known as Jara Market) is a vibrant and colorful street market affair located in the burroughs of Amman’s third circle where locals set up booths filled with such things like antiques, crafts, clothing and jewelry for tourists and visitors from all over the world to purchase.
Amongst the friendly crowd, you can find musicians playing instruments of their choosing and impromptu bands performing sets; all the while sweet aromas of roasted nuts and tropical smoothies filling the air. Bargaining at the booths has to be my favorite thing about visiting the market, because you can find the most unique and eclectic treasures for brilliant costs.
Of course I had to snap a few photos at the scene. Check out my lovely experience at Souk Jara below:
At the entrance, you can find men selling the most delicious breads as an “appetizer” during your walk through the market
Pipes and pendants made from ancient stones
A rainbow of accessories to choose from
Picking bon-bons from these lovely costumed locals
`
Traditional Middle Eastern scarves with added modern details
Traditional Jordanian and Palestinian “hattas” for kids. How cute are these?
A sweet Jordanian man playing a melody on his violin
Must-have souvenirs for anyone ever visiting Jordan
Purchasing by giving back to the community
Loved these hand painted iPhone cases.
Beautifully, authenticated hand-made paintings by local artists
If you don’t own one of these sand bottles, you really have never been to Jordan.
The view was absolutely spectacular – overlooking the city of Amman
Variety of delicious seasonings to choose from for your chips
I got ketchup + spicy seasoning on my chips. & the banana/berry smoothie was on point!
Hand sculpted and painted kitchenware for your zaatar + zeit! (thyme + olive oil)
