Details on how I decorated my DIY trendy jean jacket with retro accents.
For almost two years now, I’ve been working on creating an epic DIY enamel pin jacket. “The jacket” finally made its debut last weekend at Girl Tribe Pop-Up… and WOW, the compliments were rolling in everywhere! I’m happy to finally share it with you all because I think it’s finally at a place where it’s worth showing off. Constructing the ultimate pin jacket is a tedious task. It takes research, creativity, and saving money. Wherever I shop, if I lay eyes on a sick enamel pin, 9/10 times I buy it.
Besides all the things I love, I stuck to a main theme that I found unique and exciting. With that being said, I decided to channel all things RETRO! From old cartoon characters to nostalgic movies and even trends that I love from childhood, I am on the hunt for all things eclectic and cool. I’m talking Lizzie McGuire, Mean Girls, Spice Girls, and much more. Here are some of my tips if you’re trying to design one of your own.
Purchase a denim jacket you’re ready to decorate
I went for a not-your-average jacket that had silver-tone spikes and cool distressing on the front yoke and back. Or, you can go for a traditionally plain option.
Brainstorm which kind of pins you want to use
I chose a mix of enamel, button, and cloth pins!
Research different websites and brands
Most of my success led to searching many, many pages of Etsy and Laser Kitten (these were my absolute favorite places to shop!)
Don’t overspend on one pin
Prices for one pin generally ranges anywhere from $4 to $15. If you find one that’s over the maximum, it’s not worth it!
Negotiate with sellers
This tip is focused specifically for if shopping on Etsy. You can directly message the seller and reach an agreement on a set of pins (can be anywhere from 2-4 pins).
Don’t limit how you style it
I went for a denim-on-denim look with equally-retro accents like fun scrunchies, chokers, and glitter eyeshadow (in true AYA fashion!)
